A Weed by Any Other Name is Still Weed

Is cannabis marijuana?

Alias words for Marijuana

I know it’s confusing.  Are a blunt and a joint the same thing?  What about ganja or hashish?  If you are scratching your head about all the lingo and what the heck it means, read on…..

Sinsemila Flower

Sinsemilla flowers have no seeds and produce the most THC laden resins.

First off, yes, cannabis is the botanical term for marijuana coined by the father of modern botany, Carl Linnaeus, in 1753.  He discussed growing “cannabis sativa” (sativa means cultivated) in his “Dissertation on the Sexes of Plants”.

Cannabis is unique in that there are definite female and male plants.  Mr. Linnaeus removed the males from his garden and marveled at the female plant’s ability to keep flowers oozing with resins to capture the pollen that was not to be found;
“It was certainly a beautiful and truly admirable spectacle, to see the unimpregnated females preserve their pistilla…… not permitting them to fade….”.
Carl grew himself some sinsemillia!

Sinsemillia; there’s another term to understand.

It means “without seeds” and is the holy grail of good weed.

Here is a partial list of the numerous aliases:

Another key point to understand is there are basically three strains of cannabis that all have roots in the ancestral ground of the Kush region in the Himalayan foothills:
Cannabis Indica, Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Ruderalis, commonly known as Hemp

Leaf structure differs between the species of cannabis

Leaf structure and growing habits differ between the species of cannabis. All can cross breed creating a modern plethora of varieties, medicinal qualities, tastes and characteristics.

Migrating along southward trade lines into India, Persia and Africa the C. Indica strain was cultivated to favor the psychoactive traits of the plant.  It was deeply embedded into Hindu worship and Ayurvedic medicinal practice.

C. Sativa moved across China and northern Europe.  It was valued for it’s industrial uses along with it’s powers to relieve human maladies.

The third and most innocent of the three is Hemp.  Botanically known as C. Ruderalis, hemp has a low enough THC content that it cannot be used as a drug and is the workhorse of the cannabis world with multitudes of industrial uses from building material to fuel.

Hash or hashish is resin concentrate taken from the mature leaves and flowers of the plant and is very strong in effect.  Ganja comes from India and considered a gift to the world from the god Shiva.  A blunt or spliff is a joint with a mix of tobacco and marijuana.

Cannabis is World Wide

It is interesting to note that wherever cannabis has laid down roots world wide, it has always stayed in the geographical area tended by inhabitants that appreciates it.  Cultivating it, whether it is legal or not; risking persecution if need be, demonstrates the passion behind this most unique of plants.

I hope this has shed some light into the dark closet from which marijuana is emerging and gives you the confidence to have your own Cannabis Conversations.
